History of Sazón Nashville
Growing up in both Mexico and the United States, I struggled to understand why I didn’t quite belong in either. For new generations of Latinx youth in the United States who are “ni de aquí, ni de allá” (not from here nor there), a lack of representation can lead to a sense of isolation and loneliness in this “in between” place. I began volunteering with Nashville After Zone Alliance in 2014, after I came to Nashville to start graduate school. I was in a new city, and longed for community. Through NAZA, I got to spend afternoons joking in Spanglish with kids that reminded me of myself, when I was awkwardly exploring my bicultural self in Middle School.
In 2017-2018, funded by a Curb Center Public Scholar Fellowship, and working in collaboration with after school programs hosted by Conexión Américas and Nashville After Zone Alliance, I designed the workshops for Sazón Nashville. I was inspired by my doctoral research in archaeology and the ways ancient Mesoamericans used food practices used to build community, (to learn more about my research, click here). Sazón Nashville is designed to build communication and community within local Latinx youth groups by drawing from traditional recipes to cook and then share meals. In the face of constant attacks against Latinx identities in the U.S., we use food as a way to come together and explore the experiences, memories, traditions, and identities that both unify us and make us unique.

In this workshop we learned about the history of maize in Mesoamerica, and prepared our version of esquites “estilo Nashville”
TALLER 2/WORKSHOP 2: TORTILLAS HECHO A MANO/HANDMADE TORTILLAS
In this workshop, our guests from Guatemala showed us how to make tortillas a mano. Students got creative with the taco fillings, and some even made pupusas and quesadillas!
TALLER 3/WORKSHOP 3: TAMALES
In this workshop our guest from Oaxaca, Mexico helped us make tamales. Our students from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua chose which ingredients they wanted to fill the masa, and showed us how varied tamales can be.
FINAL SHOWCASE:
We ended our year with a party showcasing all the work students at NAZA created. Photos and artwork from the food workshops were hung at Casa Azafrán, in order to share our experiences with the community.
